Whale Shark Swimming in Puerto Princesa: What to Really Expect

The Puerto Princesa whale shark tour takes place in the open ocean 20 minutes from the pier by speedboat. These are genuinely wild whale sharks — following seasonal plankton blooms, unhabituated by feeding, and completely free to dive at any time. This guide tells you exactly what to expect, what’s included, and how to make the most of the day.

What Is a Whale Shark?

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the world’s largest fish — not whales. Adults typically measure 6–10 metres and weigh up to 12 tonnes. They are filter feeders, consuming plankton and small fish by swimming open-mouthed through dense concentrations near the surface. Despite their size, they have no predatory interest in humans.

Whale sharks are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Much of their biology — migration routes, breeding grounds, lifespan — remains poorly understood. Puerto Princesa’s open ocean encounters are a genuinely wild and ethical way to see this vulnerable species.

Why Puerto Princesa, Not Oslob?

Puerto Princesa’s whale sharks are completely wild — following seasonal plankton blooms in open ocean without any feeding or conditioning. This contrasts with Oslob, Cebu, where sharks are fed daily to keep them in place. The IUCN Shark Specialist Group and WWF have both formally flagged Oslob-style provisioning as harmful to the animals’ long-term health.

Puerto Princesa’s wild encounters are less guaranteed but far more meaningful — and the sighting rates are high (70–90% in peak season) thanks to drone spotting from altitude.

IUCN Rules: What You Can and Cannot Do

Tour Z follows international IUCN Shark Specialist Group guidelines without exception:

  • ✓ Minimum 3 metres from the shark’s body at all times
  • ✓ Minimum 4 metres from the tail
  • ✗ No touching, no riding, no attempting to hold fins
  • ✗ No flash photography — disorients the animal
  • ✗ No positioning above the shark’s surfacing path
  • ✗ No chasing if the shark dives

The guide enforces these rules in the water on every entry. These are not suggestions.

What Happens If There Are No Whale Sharks?

Wild animals don’t follow schedules. On tours where whale sharks are not sighted, Tour Z’s Secret Spot Promise applies:

  • A quiet snorkel reef known only to our guides — far from tourist boats, healthy coral, fish in every direction
  • A small surprise gift — something you’ll remember
  • The full day on the water — same boat, same crew, same lunch, same timing

Additionally, the 2-in-1 Success Guarantee applies: 25% refund if only one species is encountered (whale shark or dolphin but not both). 50% refund if neither is seen.

Combining Whale Sharks with Port Barton

The most popular itinerary combination: whale shark tour on Day 2 (returns 1:00 PM), afternoon van to Port Barton (2–3 hours, ₱600), island hopping on Day 4. Two completely different ecosystems in back-to-back days. Most guests describe this as the best two-day sequence of their entire Philippines trip.

See the Puerto Princesa + Port Barton 4-Day Itinerary for the full logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for whale sharks in Puerto Princesa?

April to October — peaking June through August when plankton blooms are most concentrated. Shoulder months (April, October) still have good sighting rates. The tour does not operate November through March.

Can non-swimmers join?

Yes. USCG life vests are provided for all guests. Non-swimmers can observe from the boat or float alongside the guide — whale sharks regularly surface close enough to see clearly from above water. Our 12-guest limit means every person gets individual guide attention.

How is this different from Oslob?

Oslob feeds sharks daily. Puerto Princesa encounters are 100% wild. This means Oslob near-guarantees sightings (and harms the animals); Puerto Princesa encounters happen only because the shark chose to be there.

Is the ₱3,500 price really all-inclusive?

Yes. Hotel pickup, 30ft speedboat, drone spotting, snorkel gear, life vest, wildlife guide, coastal lunch, all permits and marine fees, and the Secret Spot Promise. Nothing to pay at the pier.
